Get to know Matthew Rankmore, FitFarms Nutritionist Chef

My name is Matthew Rankmore, I have been a chef now for 7 years. My intention was never to be a chef although I have always had a passion for food since being forced into watching ready steady cook as a child (mum loved it). But I wanted to be a professional rugby player, unfortunately, an injury stopped me from going professional.

Anyway, I was 15 and washing pots and pans in my Uncle’s restaurant called The Six Bells, nice country ala carte restaurant situated just a few miles from my house. One shift the Chef De Partie who was in charge of the starter and desert section failed to arrive for his shift, it was Christmas time and we were extremely busy. My Uncle came to inform the chefs that he had not turned up for his shift and then told me I had to take his place, I refused, he then said if I didn’t cover his section I wouldn’t have a job, I had to oblige as I didn’t want to lose my job or my small income I was making.

I was very nervous and well out of my comfort zone but I had been watching the chefs cook and plate the dishes for some time so I fell on my feet naturally and absolutely nailed it! From that day the chef was sacked and I was employed.

I remained at my Uncle’s restaurant for 1 year while I was in college, I later went onto gain an apprenticeship with the Marriot hotel and then later worked in Bordeaux in France and also Rome, Italia.

In my years of experience, I have gained a level 1, 2 & 3 in Catering and Hospitality, Young chef award 2010, and my most proud achievement of a Michelin Award which was awarded to me January this year.

I have recently started a new career path in nutritional cooking and health values of food and I LOVE it!

Introducing FitFarms Five Star in Quantock Hills, Somerset

Quantock Hills Fitness RetreatSince we have been running FitFarms all the way back in 2006 we have always chosen some great locations which have been picked for being in beautiful countryside.

2017 is going to be an extremely exciting year as we have a selection of ‎new courses starting. These courses include FitFarms Accessible, FitFarms Budget and our very latest weight loss and fitness course FitFarms Five Star.

FitFarms Five Star is situated ‎in the Quantock Hills near Bridgwater in Somerset. The Quantock Hills is famous for being the first place to be awarded the title of an area of outstanding beauty. We are also only a few miles away from Exmoor National Park which makes for some great coutryside walks with some spectacular moor to sea views.

The property where we will be running FitFarms Five Star has been awarded five stars by the English Country Board. The rooms are all of an extremely high standard and have contemporary en suite bathrooms. The rooms also have flat screen televisions ‎mounted on the walls with comfortable throws draping over the beds.

There is also the added benefit of being able to split the property into two sections allowing the team to run workshops in one area and physical exercise sessions in the other area at the same time. Both areas have swimming pools and wood burners for those cold evenings after the busy FitFarms schedules. In the summer months the propery has long bi folding doors which can be opened up leading to the outdoor exercise area where the health team will be conducting exercises like circuit training, kettlebells, ‎yoga to name but a few.

We will be running a free service where we collect guests from Heathrow airport and Taunton and also return them at the end of the week. There will be plenty of parking spaces on site for those who would like to drive.

The first course will start in June 2017 and prices will be advertised on our website before Christmas.

FitFarms Spain Fitness Camp in September

September in Spain.. It’s here again!

fitness camp spain I’m very excited at the idea of flying out to camp Spain in a few weeks for our second time this year, the last one was such a massive success with the clients having thoroughly enjoying themselves and the energy throughout the week being amazing, we had evening walks by some beautiful coastline, we had extraordinary food from our local chef, We had the most amazing weather!… We had a great time! So I cannot wait to go back and do it all again.

Above all else what made this week great was the way the group took to the idea we are trying to promote, the concept that anyone can and indeed should enjoy exercise and activity and do it only to the extent they enjoy and in the way they enjoy it. It’s the main reason we consider ourselves a fitness camp and not a boot camp. Not because there is anything wrong with boot camps, they work and they work very well but not everyone is in the right place for that approach but everyone could be if they wished.

As a fitness camp we look at not pushing everyone to their physical limits (just those that ask for it! ;-)..) but helping everyone see this lifestyle change in a more multipurpose full way for some it’s achieving the summer body for others it’s improving mobility for many in between it’s finding something manageable and achievable. In a lot of ways this works so much better in Spain because, well; it’s a holiday! The whole attitude, mood and environment is different from home and people respond really well to it. So if your reading this before flying out to meet us in Alicante I hope your looking forward to your stay with FitFarms at fitness camp Spain, be prepared for hard work, good food and lots of questions.

FitFarms Exmoor Disabled Weight Loss Boot Camp Schedule

The next FitFarms project is the FitFarms disabled weight loss boot camp which is going to be run on Exmoor down in the pretty county of Somerset.

The programme will consist of exercise, nutrition and workshops and will be challenging but also fun. The facilities have been well chosen ‎which will allow a wide range of guests with physical impairments.

The FitFarms team are working with a disabled charity which have been running for just under 10 years and are well known in the industry for providing safe and effective courses.

FitFarms will add ‎dates to the website in the month of October 2016. We are planning on running four in the first year and then we have scheduled 10 for 2018. The health and safety is going to be very different than what FitFarms is use to on the weight loss camps that we have been running since 2006.

We have a new team member from Hereford called Dave who runs wheelchair based aerobics who will be heading up the weight loss boot camp team.

Dave has been working with guests that have disabilities for over ten years and has quite a following in his local area of Hereford and the Rye valley. ‎Currently Dave runs three wheelchair aerobic classes on Monday, Wednesday and Friday evenings from 7pm to 8pm. There is also wheelchair resistance that has proven to be very popular on Tuesday nights and Dave is already trying to find a new venune for another class that starts on Thursday evenings at 7.30pm. He is also heavily envolved in wheelchair basketball at Worcester University which play at national level.

‎Dave has said that he’s really looking forward to the challenge of running a course that is not just the hour but for the whole week and is very keen to see the results that can be achieved in this time period.

FitFarms will be looking at dropping guests body fat but more importantly changing lifestyles.

The Future of FitFarms

The Future of FitFarms

So here’s the plan… FitFarms wants to be more! More than just a 7 day retreat, more than just a chance to lose weight or learn about nutrition, I can honestly say there are lots of camps and trainers out there that probably achieve much greater results than we do, that can boast bigger fat, weight loss and inch loss. Which ever camp, gym, class or trainer you look at their clients sing about what a great experience it was or how much they enjoyed their training and sessions. In my mind whilst this may not be the only factor, it seems like a consistent one. So FitFarms wants to focus on the continued improvement and success of their clients! With this in mind we are looking into updating and improving our post course support and providing one to one follow up for our members. Our members area will have both generic routines and exercise library’s as well as a constantly updated list of useful information, recipes and articles that we feel fall in line with the approach we want to take. We will do our upmost to deliver an on going service to our members to make sure they feel the benefit of working with us.

This year we hope to make some significant changes in this respect, starting with the current members area and course follow up. Updating the members area with an extensive exercise library, some generic routines and programs and all the current recipes as well as useful links and contact details for all the on-site and support staff involved in our program. The course follow up is currently available contact 24/7 with any of the on site staff from your course, this is to be improved by scheduling follow up phone calls and target setting reviews. Obviously these will be available to all but the option will be given at the end of your course and follow up calls etc will not be mandatory or made without prior agreement.

As I said FitFarms wants to be more, this year we will be busy making these changes happen and we are always happy to hear suggestions or feedback so if you have any ideas please feel free to get in touch.

FitFarms Weight Loss and Fitness Courses in March 2016

FitFarms Weight Loss and Fitness Courses in March 2016

FitFarms has two weight loss and fitness courses running in March. The first one is at our southern site which is based in Dorset just outside the historic town of Blandford Forum. This is an extremely popular fitness camp course because the facilities are excellent. We have a great indoor swimming pool that can be used during the day. There is also a sauna and jacuzzi on site which people enjoy during the fitness programme. The surrounding countryside is spectacular as we sit at the bottom of Bulbarrow the hill which yes we do walk up during the course. The views at the top are worth it when you eventually get to the top. You can see why Hardy painted so much of the Dorset countryside as the rolling hills and hedges are quite breathtaking.

We have some great ‎walks on this course one which is always a favourite is the Sturminster Newton course which we usually do on Wednesday morning. We stride off into a forest and as we swing around to the left into an open field the view hits you. Then we walk down for 20 / 30 minutes into the town of Sturminster Newton itself which is a historic market town. Depending on how fast the group are walking we sometimes have time to see the historic mill which is a tour of around fifteen minutes.

If you are interested in joining us for seven nights we still have some availability on the course starting 11th March. We are also running two to five night courses starting over the same weekend. ‎

Then the weight loss and fitness camp team make there‎ way up to Derbyshire to the FitFarms headquarters which is based just outside the town of Matlock. This is known as our headquarters because we have ran more than 100 retreats from this venue. It is very popular with our guests due to the countryside and wonderful accommodation. The retreats accommodation is Peak District stone cottages set around a lake. You can also see the lake from the exercise area which is a great distraction when you are feeling tired.

The next available date for the 7 night course at our Derbyshire headquarters fitness camp is on 25th March and then we run the shorter courses starting over this weekend as well.

What’s Latest from FitFarms this 2016

FitFarms is going into its tenth year of business in weight loss boot camp industry and we are pleased to say the programme has once again improved for 2016. The fitness team now include a GP referral trainer, level 4 personal trainers and kettle bell instructors. We also have a sports therapist about to join us on our first week back of the year.

The health team have always been the core of the company as they deliver the programme and make those all important life changes within the guest. The life changing process has increased again with the introduction of the FitFarms live in psychologist ‎who has brought a new angle to the behaviour workshops.

Leading the weight loss retreat team is Andy Baker who has been with us for five years the longest ever member of the team. Andy’s ‎improved the standard of the team by insisting that everyone meets the new FitFarms level 4 standard.

The most recent change is Sean Roberts who brings a wealth of experience from working is the US and Australia.

Another core member of the team is our nutritional therapist Lesley Harper who devises the nutrition programme and delivers two extremely informative workshops during the weight loss camp course.

FitFarms Update: Latest Programmes and Plans for 2016

FitFarms Update: Latest Programmes and Plans for 2016

Well it’s September and everyone has that back to school feeling, the days are certainly shorter and yes even us here at the glamping holistic fitness boot camp would say that when it’s colder and darker it is a little bit tougher to get motivated. However that feeling doesn’t last for long as we know from working in the fitness industry and helping lots of people over the years it’s a lifestyle change. This means people have lifestyles in winter as well as summer so if you are feeling like getting comfy with nibbles or a glass of wine every evening of the week then try and resist. Remember the 80 – 20 rule over the winter period and you’ll keep straight on track.

Here at http://www.fitfarms.co.uk/ we like to always look ahead at new exciting opportunities for us and our guests. This year we launched FitFarms Camp at Worcestershire which has been extremely popular. There are already plans to launch FitFarms Camp in London and a seaside location for 2016. Working out on a beach in a FitFarms Camp environment is going to be fun and really inspirational to help with our guests weight loss and fitness goals.

There’s also some more really great company news in the way that FitFarms is going to run a profit free or charity programme for children in the UK. We will be concentrating on getting that same healthy message that we deliver on our adult courses but in an even more fun environment.

There is another programme in the pipeline which is called FitFarms For Family. This is our residential programme but directed towards families. There will be a lot of emphasis on working out together as a family group, support and education.

Last but not least FitFarms Personal will be opening at the end of this year. So what’s this? Well this is the brainchild of Andrew Baker our operations leader. FitFarms Personal is a service which we are going to offer to guest that have been to FitFarms which enables you to have a one to one day with a FitFarms trainers. The programme will be detailed and tailored to your needs and best of all we come to you!

The FitFarms Holistic Weight Loss Boot Camp

The FitFarms Holistic Weight Loss Boot Camp

Here at FitFarms holistic weight loss camp we try and give the guests as much variety in their exercise regime as possible. We run our FitFarms weight loss camps for durations of two night courses which give a quick taster. Then our mid courses which are three, four or even five days in length. These courses give a real life changing experience to our guests. However the most popular weight loss retreat we run is the award winning 7 night programme. This course takes guests through the whole process of nutrition, exercise and behaviour therapy where we concentrate on changing old bad habits and replacing them with brand new good habits.

The science behind the nutrition programme is portion control whilst ‎balancing blood sugar levels which stops sugar cravings. Our in house nutritional therapist Lesley Harper carries out workshops during the week. These fitness retreat workshops will go through the basics of nutritional therapy, label reading and then move onto mineral testing and sub clinical theroid testing.

The weight loss and exercise programme is probably the part that our guests become the most concerned about. Thoughts like will I be able to keep up and what happens if ‎I am asked to do something I can not achieve are the most common questions that guests ask themselves. Well have no fear because over the years we have been running weight loss and fitness retreats since 2006 we are very use to adapting the fitness programme taking into consideration everyone’s fitness level and medical conditions.

Last and probably the most important ‎part of our fitness holiday programme is the behaviour workshop. This workshop is set out to change the way guests think about exercise and nutrition. We change old habits into new habits and work out what triggers those habits so we do not make the same slip ups when we go back to our normal lives in the home environment.
